Vimy Commemoration 2021
Due to Covid 19, Cadets were unable to gather to Commemorate the Battle of Vimy Ridge that took place 104 years ago this month. On April 9th of that year with WW1 winding down, 15,000 Canadian infantrymen attacked a strongly held German position at Vimy Ridge. The attack succeeded in driving the enemy off the Ridge and over-running their positions. However, victory came at heavy cost as nearly 3600 Canadian soldiers were killed and another 7000 wounded. In 2011, The Army Cadet League of Canada adopted this famous battle as our official day of Commemoration.
On Behalf of the Army Cadets in BC and the Army Cadet League of Canada-BC Branch, league members, Roger and Louise Prouse laid a wreath at the Cross of Sacrifice at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver on April 9 2021. Normally, over 300 lower mainland Army Cadets would of have been on parade at this site where over 360 WW1 returning veterans are interned.
On Friday 9, April 2021 there was a small gathering of only 9 individuals all wearing masks and socially distanced. Also represented were the BCR Association, The Seaforth Association, The City of Vancouver, The Airforce Association, and the RUSI (Royal United Services Institute).
